The orange and the potato: dysfunction within self-made paradigms

Late night musing are often not worth sharing. This may be one of them, but since I’m new at this blog thing, I’ll take a risk and post. There is this husband and wife who have, it seems, a difficult arrangement. The husband lives most of his time in a different city than his wife and often travels abroad for business. It’s almost as if this couple looks at marriage like it is, let’s say for the sake of illustration, a potato, when in fact, marriage is, let’s say, an orange. So they cook and fry their “potato” and wonder why things don’t come out they way they expect. If only they knew that they were dealing with an orange and not a potato. People often define things the way they want and then operate within that paradigm, suffering in relationships and not realizing their mistake. Haven’t we all suffered the dysfunctional effects of our self-made paradigms at one time or another? God save us, and He can. That familiar verse Ps.119:105 puts us on track in stating, “Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” May God’s Word enlighten and free us.

i like the illustration. doubt i'd like if my fried potatoes tasted like fried oranges :P
and i agree, everything in this world is upside down & inside out & what not. it's funny that we people try to discover our own "better", as we think, way of living when in reality God drew the best way in His Word. we have this great expression in russian - выдумывать велосипед. that's what we often do.

So true. And it doesn't just happen among individuals, you can see it in social groups, governments and any organization/institution.

Tracy! I heard you had joined the bloggin world and was very excited! And I see was right in my anticipation of you blog! Wonderful! I keep saying that many of the interpersonal (and yes, Sarah, probably organizational, etc. as well) problems in this world are a result of people either not knowing or not admitting just who or what they really are and then working within that paradigm of reality. Many of us, especially Christians, echo what we "know" we "should" be even though we are far from it and so we say we are an orange when really we are a potatoe. To quote my sister, "Know who you are and be it, jerk". :) Cuz by God's grace we are more than we are. Ok...this is a post in itself and not just a comment...sorry...but you inspire me! :) Keep it up! :)

I am really surprised Danny Foote did not have something to say about the orange potato thing so maybe his dad will have a shot at it.

Does this means potatoes are better for you than oranges? Or does it mean a marriage is made in the kitchen?

Somehow this lacks Danny's particular dry , benign irony, Oh well.... Hi Tracy form the Footes gald to see you are blogging
